Ayn Rand is one of my favorite authors. Her philosophy is known as objectivism. She has a controversial stance on morality and I find it rather inspiring; I like her view that an objective reality exists and can be perceived--I like this idea because it emphasizes the importance of realism and the pragmatic value of seeing the world as accurately as possible. In this way I see an important overlap in her work and Robert Greene’s; one of Greene’s core ideas is the importance realism plays in relating to others-- Greene has an awesome blog post on his website www.powerseductionandwar.com in which he analyzes the brilliance of Iceburg Slim’s analogy of hustling in a pool game as it applies to life; as a pool hustler you have to be able to see every angle and hone in on it, just as you do in a game of pool, and in life. Rand also discussed the importance of staying true to what you objectively perceive as morally correct, refusing to bow to public opinion. Her book/movie “The Fountainhead” inspired me, as I’m sure it would any artist, to hold true to my perception of what is good music and to not be persuaded to like what the public likes for the simple fact that it is what the public likes. While dwelling on these ideas I was scrolling through some of Sarah Gazerek’s music and found a part of her song that I really liked. I knocked out a drum pattern in Maschine, loaded it up in Acid along with the sample, and went to work.
