about

The Mickey Rourke vocal sample from the movie Killshot is what make this beat a lot of fun. Its about the meanest and most perfect vocal sample I can think of to lead into a heavy drop. This beat was my first attempt to make an effort at creating something that is mostly dubstep. The beat I did for Tech N9ne was about 50% dubstep, 30% hip hop, and 20% reggae. “#STFU” was designed to be more like 75% dubstep. Before I made the beat, I studied a lot of different dubstep artists. Two artists that particularly influenced me were Rusko and Skrillex. Rusko has an awesome “master class” video in which he shows his methods for making dubstep. I learned a lot from watching him do live performances and from him laying out his techniques. I went on to further youtube searching and discovered Skrillex; his track “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” was influential in how I created “#STFU,” particularly with regard to the arrangement. His live shows are awesome and he is sick with programming dubstep. The most important lesson I took away from my studies was the importance of having a huge drop. After my research I decided to obtain some new software and knock something out that is mostly dubstep for BWGWAB. I had a lot of fun messing around with my soft synths and creating the dubstep bassline. I played around with dBlue glitch to help build the rugged sound and to accent the synthline that comes in later in the verse. The end result was a dubstep/hip hop hybrid with a big drop that can stand alone as an instrumental or could be sick with someone like Tech N9ne or Krizz Kaliko would sound amazing on. I’d also like to hear someone like Eminem or Lil Wayne or Rick Ross play with a beat like “#STFU.” The way dubstep can command a crowd would be awesome for their concerts. I’m going to bring out some of my dubstep/hip hop hybrids when I perform at iStandard’s national championships in New York this fall.
