This is one of my favorite beats. It is the only beat on Big White Guy With a Brew that also appeared on my 2010 instrumental LP Deep. The version on BWGWAB is only 1:30 and is a more enhanced and interesting evolution of the version that appeared on Deep. I made the enhancements to the beat as a way to make the beat more presentable and interesting to people hearing it without any vocals over it, particularly for when I did my first performance at an iStandard Chicago showcase. This beat originated while I was living in Los Angeles. I had an amazing week of creation in the studio where I was making beats quickly and recording songs to them. No one has heard these songs--I was just having fun channeling some ideas. When I’m in this type of unrestricted mind state creating music for no purpose other than my own, I’m able to stumble into unpredictable ideas through experimentation. I knew I wanted to make a beat that sound sampled, so naturally I decided in order to best achieve this sound, I will compose a song designed to sound like a sample, and sample the song I composed. I designed something that sounded like a simple version of 70’s smooth jazz. I liked what I had created so much that it inspired me to record a vocal over it--the vocal saying “Let me take you to my place/Let me take you far away”--in order to have the hook sound like it has a vocal sample. I bounced 8 bars of the music and 8 bars of the hook and loaded it into Acid Pro as if I were loading up a sample. I pitch shifted it down a few semitones and went to work chopping it, editing it, and surrounding it with a heavy drum track and additional instrumentation.
